About Churkinsky Monastery
An ancient men’s monastery of the Astrakhan Diocese on a high Volga hill—a place of prayer, repentance, work, pilgrimage and spiritual revival.
A monastery among the Volga waterways
The High-Mountain Dormition–Saint Nicholas Churkinsky Hermitage is located in Churkin settlement, Volodarsky District, Astrakhan Region. Its name is associated with the high hill and the monastery tradition concerning the repentant cave-dweller Churka.
The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, protector of travellers and those who journey by water. Divine services are again celebrated here, pilgrims are received, the monastery household is maintained, and restoration of the historic complex continues.
Spiritual mission
The heart of monastic life is common and personal prayer, the Divine Liturgy, repentance and work. The brotherhood prays for peace, the Church, benefactors and those who ask for help.
Pilgrims and guests
Visitors come to attend services, submit names for commemoration, pray before sacred objects, seek spiritual conversation and experience quiet. Organised visits should be arranged in advance.
Revival
After decades of devastation, monastic life resumed in spring 2004. Restoration of churches, residential buildings and pilgrim facilities continues.
Sacred memory
The monastery’s history is connected with Saint Nicholas, icons of the Mother of God, Saint Kirill of Astrakhan, Archimandrite Evgeniy and many generations of ascetics. Monastery tradition preserves the story of the cave-dweller Churka as a witness to repentance and spiritual transformation.
